IHI E&C’s Dr. Vic Edwards, a Subject Matter Expert on Process Safety, chaired the 9 th Global Congress on Process Safety (GCPS) held in San Antonio, Texas, from April 28-May 1, 2013. The GCPS is the world’s largest gathering of process safety professionals and is presented annually by the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the AIChE Safety & Health Division. Edwards addressed the congress in an opening speech that focused on preventing serious incidents that result in fires, explosions, toxic gas releases, and injury to people, property, and the environment. He emphasized the importance of learning from the incidents through the creation of inherently safer technology and through the safer siting, design, construction, maintenance, operation, and decommissioning of process plants and their supply chains. Edwards concluded by challenging the audience to take at least one new concept, technique, or learning back to the work place, and apply it in a way that prevents a serious process incident that might have occurred otherwise.
The GCPS is a meeting of the most knowledgeable process safety professionals in the oil and gas industry. GCPS attendees share and learn practical and technological advances in all aspects of process safety.
